If you were in a crowded auditorium and your dad called out your name, would you recognize his voice? How is that possible? When you think about the number of people that are speaking at the same time, how is it possible that you can recognize one parent’s voice in the midst of the clamor? Maybe you don’t have a dad. Can you recognize your mother’s voice? Both of my parents have left this world years ago, yet I know their voices in my memory.
Whoever your parent may be, whether natural, adopted, or any other reason why you consider that person to be a parent figure in your life, you know when they speak. It is a natural phenomenon that every animal experiences called “imprinting.” When a baby is born, they learn their parent’s appearance and voice. This allows them to return to the correct nest, cave, den, or home. The child knows that their parent will protect them, feed them, clean them, and teach them.
It is the natural role of the parents in most species of animals to fulfill these duties of child bearing. In the same manner, it is the natural role of the child to primarily learn survival skills from their parents. If they must kill to eat, the children need to learn how to stalk and hunt prey. If they must forage for food, the children need to learn what is good food and what should be avoided. These are natural roles for natural parents. Some are better than others, but this is how the natural world of flesh and blood parenting works.
When a natural man of body and soul accepts Jesus Christ as their savior and makes Him their Lord, the natural man is no longer natural, but a body, soul, and spirit being. They have a new and additional parent in their lives. God Almighty has become their new parent and the Holy Spirit has been created in their being. They are no longer separated from God. They are now connected with a spiritual “Hot Line” that neither God nor any evil power can separate. This is how it is possible for the new “babe in Christ” to hear and recognize the voice of God.
Obedience to that voice yields positive results, and will never contradict the written Word of God. Disobedience to that voice yields the same results that logic and reason have always given previously, mixed results. In order to conform to the image of Jesus Christ promised in the book of 1 John, time and practice is needed. We need time to listen to God’s voice and practice obedience to that voice in order to recognize it easily in our lives. We get that voice imprint when we become born again, but the Devil can counterfeit that voice and we need to know the written Word to tell the difference. Our experiences sharpen our ability to know the difference. This is why we can learn and grow spiritually all the days of our lives.
We have four parents to choose to obey. Our natural parents that gave us life, our mom’s and dad’s. We have our spiritual father, God, who we can only know through Jesus Christ to receive the Holy Spirit. Or we can listen to the spiritual usurper, the master counterfeiter, and liar, Lucifer. The reward for obedience to God through faith in His Word is eternal life. If God is your daddy, then you are a Radical Christian already, it’s more than a warm feeling of peace, it is obedience in peace, in the midst of the raging storms of life. This is walking in faith. The consequence for disobedience to God, by rejecting His Word and living by the words of any other parent that may lead us away from Him, is eternal death. This is the walk of the flesh.
The walk you choose every day determines which parent you are following. Whose word will yield the greatest benefit for your life? Who do you want to call your daddy?
